The first Super Week of the year was held in Mbarara, Western Uganda.  It began on Monday 12th April with online registration at World Rugby training portal (https://passport.worldrugby.org).

The training started on 13th April with Level 1 Officiatingconducted by Peter Kirunda.  The aim of the module was to get a basic understanding of how to referee.   The participants looked at the principles of rugby and the principles of the laws.  “It is the duty of the referee to apply fairly all the laws in every match, including law trials and variations as authorized by World Rugby” (WR, 2021).  We also looked at the refereeing process, the role of the referee and referee preparation.  Thirteen trainees took part from Mbarara (8), Kabale (3), KIU Crows (1)and UMU Nkozi (1).

Training on Day 2 was First Aid in Rugby conducted by Steven Buyungo on 14th April.  We partnered with the Physiotherapy Department of Mbarara University who sent 8 students and 1 lecturer specializing in sports rehabilitation to attend the course.  In total there were 15 participants.

The 5 steps to player welfare should always be applied:

1. Be a lifesaver; know your A-B-C (Airway, Breathing, Circulation).
2. If they are on the deck, think about the neck.
3. Train to prevent injuries.
4. Tackle concussion.
5. Kick infection into touch.

Coaching Level 1 was on Day 3, it was conducted by Andrew Owor on Thursday 15th April.  There was a similar course two years ago and this year 12 people attended including teachers from St. Kizito Prep Seminary.

Coaching key factors looks at individual skills (e.g. running, kicking) and unit skills (e.g. lineout, scrummaging).

Strength and Conditioning Level 1 took place on Friday 16thApril. It was run by Benjamin Temper who took 10 of us through conditioning for children, youth and adults.  All participants had to learn how to do functional screening which is an effective method of observing the fundamental movement patterns of a player and identifying movement imbalances.  Screening is the process of assessing a players movement patterns and it gives coaches information on the joint mobility, stability and muscular balance of a player (Bishop et al, 2015).

The Super Week was supervised by Robert Bwali.
